APA Citation Help, 7th Edition for Medicine, Nursing, & Health Sciences

For More Information

APA 7 foremost defers to instructor guidelines on the use or non-use of AI tools in the academic setting.

However, if your instructor has cleared you to use ChatGPT or other AI & large language tools, use the templates below to cite them.

APA suggests describing how the tool was used in the methods section or the introduction of your paper. Additionally, provide the prompt used and a direct quotation of the information retrieved in the text.

More detailed information can be found on the APA blog post on citing AI. All information below has been adapted from that same post.

Important Points for Using AI in-text (when instructors allow for it)
  • AI-generated text is not retrievable to the reader. Therefore, if you use information in-text, it is best to quote the section you are using while also including the prompt. You might also consider including the entire AI response as an appendix so readers can see the exact context of the information. Remember that AI creates a unique response in every session, even given the same prompt.
  • An example of AI use in text is below:
    • When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).
