Legal citations can be tricky. In most cases, the APA defers to The Blue Book, a reference for legal citations. Below, you will find information on writing basic statute and regulation citations. For other formats, consult Chapter 11 (pp. 355-368) of the 7th edition of the APA manual or Ask A Librarian.

Statutes & Regulations

Generic:	Name of the Statute, Title number Source § Section number(s) (Year). http://www.xxxxxxxx

Example:	Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, 29 U.S.C. §§ 2601–2654 (2006). https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?path=/prelim@title29/chapter28&edition=prelim

Important Points for Citing Statutes and Titles

If you are citing a range of section numbers, use two §§ squiggley things.
A detailed explanation of each of the sections of these references can be found at the link below.
If the statute does not have a name, leave that element off.
