AMA Citing Guide

Journal Recommendations

  • Ask your peers, faculty, or mentors for recommendations 
  • Seek out journals whose scope matches your needs
  • Make sure the journal accepts the type of article you want to submit
  • Check the "Instructions for Authors" thoroughly
  • Compare journal characteristics and competitive factors
  • Ensure that you have assessed whether or not the journal is a questionable journal (predatory journal)
  • Look to see if your journal is indexed for MEDLINE or other credible indexes

These journals focus on student contributions and are often run by students as well.

  • American Medical Student Research Journal
    AMSRJ is "dedicated to promoting interest in future career research through recognizing the scientific accomplishments of medical students across the country. We are seeking notable articles, of which a medical student is the primary author, which meet excellence in research standards."
     
  • Einstein Journal of Biology and Medicine
    EJBM "encourages the publication of a wide range of scholarly material by students, residents, fellows, postdocs, faculty, and alumni."
     
  • Harvard Medical Student Review
    HMSR "is student-founded, student-managed, and student-administered under the guidance of faculty and staff. Its mission is to provide a platform for students to contribute to important issues facing health and medicine through a variety of formats, including scholarly articles, editorials, and original artwork."
     
  • Harvard Public Health Review
    "The mission of the Harvard Public Health Review (HPHR) is to improve health at the local, national, and international levels. To that end, HPHR will publish content grounded in thoughtful evaluation of evidence and research that addresses issues of health equity."
     
  • Student BMJ
    "Student BMJ is a world renowned resource that supports medical students through every stage, from applying to medical school all the way to making the transition to practicing as a junior doctor."

These journals specialize in the publication of clinical research. These journals are considered to be mid-tier publications. While they may not have the highest of impact factors or are less well known, that does not mean that they are any less respected when compared to their high-tier counterparts. Alongside the suggestions featured on this box's first tab, be sure to consider the size of the journal's readership, the authors that have been previously published, how specialized the journal is, and the reputation of its editorial board. 

All authors have to start somewhere and theirs nothing wrong with starting here.

  • Postgraduate Medicine
    A peer-reviewed medical journal established by Charles Mayo MD, founder of the Mayo Clinic. The journal publishes research which supports primary care physicians in solving clinical problems and improving patient care.
     
  • Postgraduate Medical Journal
    PMJ publishes papers that focus on core competencies; describe current practice and new developments in all branches of medicine; describe relevance and impact of translational research on clinical practice; provide background relevant to examinations; as well as papers on medical education and medical education research.

     
  • Annals of Internal Medicine: Clinical Cases 
    Annals of Internal Medicine Clinical Cases is published in partnership between the American College of Physicians and the American Heart Association. It is a peer-reviewed open access journal that publishes case reports, case series, medical image/video cases, and clinical reflections across the spectrum of medicine.
  • The American Journal of Medical Sciences
    The mission of The American Journal of the Medical Sciences (AJMS) is to support the exchange of knowledge and information and to publish high quality clinical, basic, and education research.
     
  • Clinical Medicine and Research
    Clinical Medicine & Research is a peer reviewed publication of original scientific medical research that is relevant to a broad audience of medical researchers and healthcare professionals.
     
  • The Journal of Clinical Investigation
    The Journal of Clinical Investigation is a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering biomedical research. Its readership covers a wide range of medical disciplines and sectors; basic and phase I/II clinical research articles in all biomedical specialties, including Autoimmunity, Gastroenterology, Immunology, Metabolism, Nephrology, Neuroscience, Oncology, Pulmonology, Vascular Biology, and many others.

     
  • Connecticut Medicine – published by the Connecticut State Medical Society
    CSMS members, as well as non-member physicians, are welcome to submit scientific articles to Connecticut Medicine.
