The library EBM modules will walk you through the complete evidence based medicine (EBM) process, emphasizing the elements of a well-built clinical question, searching for quality literature in biomedical resources, and evaluating evidence for validity, quality, and relevance. Each module was designed to deliver its content in a brief and focused fashion.
Identify the five steps that make up the foundation of EBM
Understand the strengths and weaknesses associated with EBM
Assess and extract the pertinent details from a given clinical problem
Module 2:Appraising Evidence
In this module, you will learn how to identify and appraise different types of evidence. At the end of this module, you will be able to:
Review different concepts that will help you identify and select the proper evidence needed to answer your clinical question
An overview of the different types and levels of evidence and information sources
Strategies for critical appraisal, including those that will determine quality and relevancy
Module 3:Asking a Clinical Question
In this module, you will learn about PICO and constructing a well-built clinical question. At the end of this module, you will be able to:
Extract relevant information from a clinical problem to identify the components of PICO
Formulate an appropriate and well-built clinical question using PICO
Distinguish if the question is a background or foreground question
Recognize that questions can be classified into four different types
Identify which type of study design/evidence properly corresponds to a specific type of question
Module 4: Literature Search Strategy
In this module, you will learn different searching strategies that you can employ when acquiring literature from biomedical resources. At the end of this module, you will be able to:
Properly utilize Boolean Operators to create a search string
Employ basic searching strategies such as phrase searching, truncation, and wildcard to create a more effective search
Understand the differences between keyword and subject heading searching
Search for Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms in PubMed
Determine appropriate resources for acquiring literature for different information needs
