Understanding Folders

One way of arranging your references in RefWorks is to organize them into folders. You can have a single reference in multiple folders - no need to duplicate the reference. You may also create subfolders. There is no limit to the number of folders that you can create in RefWorks.

When you edit a reference, regardless of its location or existence in multiple folders, those edits appear in all instances of the reference (since you only have one copy of the reference itself).

You may also have references that are not placed in any folder (though that is not recommended).

Understanding Projects

Projects allow you to maintain separate reference collections for different research projects. Each Project that you create will have its own set of references and folders. This is especially useful for those who may be juggling multiple projects and want to keep their references separate. You create new Projects, rename them, and share them with others.

All new RefWorks accounts will start with one Project, titled Untitled Project

Default Folders: Not in a Folder & Last Imported

RefWorks has two default folders, the NOT IN A FOLDER folder and the LAST IMPORTED folder. These are further described below:

NOT IN A FOLDER folder:

This folder hold all reference that have not been further organized into other folders in the account. Once items have been placed into user-created folders, they are automatically removed from the NOT IN A FOLDER folder. The NOT IN A FOLDER folder can be found on the left side of the page under the MY FOLDERS menu.

LAST IMPORTED folder:

The LAST IMPORTED folder holds all the references imported into RefWorks in the last 30 days. This is useful for organizing your references in bulk after importing them into RefWorks. You have the option of clearing the LAST IMPORTED folder after organizing the references within. The LAST IMPORTED folder can be found on the left side of the page.

Note: Any references left in the Last Imported Folder that has not been sorted into a folder will be automatically deleted after 30 days.
