In 1981 The Centers for Disease Control published a notice in MMWR about the unusual incidence of Karposi's Sacoma in New York City gay men. This was soon followed by a July 3, 1981 article in the New York Times "Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals." What followed was the discovery of a deadly disease which would kill over one million people. The medical mystery and the race to find answers was complicated by society's attitude toward gay people and drug users, who also soon became victims of the disease.
