Larson College Collections
Larson College was a private, two-year, all women’s college located in Hamden, Connecticut. Founded in 1911 as the Larson Shorthand Tutoring School in New Haven, by George Larson and his wife, Olga, Larson was dedicated to the practical education of young women in preparation for work and/or continuing education at a four-year institution. While some women’s four-year colleges existed, there were relatively few and they largely were for women from the upper middle class, while Larson was available to women from more diverse economic backgrounds. Larson was part of two movements: creating educational and vocational opportunities for women, and modernizing education through the introduction of two-year colleges focused on practical, vocation-based training
In 1952 Quinnipiac College took over Larson’s administration, land and buildings, and Larson ceased to exist as a separate entity. In the history of Quinnipiac, Larson College is usually briefly referred to as part of Quinnipiac’s rapid growth during the 1950’s, with little said about the students and faculty at Larson, nor about the effect, if any, of Larson’s curriculum on Quinnipiac’s. While some materials (catalogs, yearbooks, student publications, photographs, and scrapbooks) have been found among the ABL collection at Quinnipiac, there was no Larson College archive as such. ABL staff have started to gather together all the Larson material and would like to build upon the collection with objects and stories from Larson graduates. Given the age of any surviving Larson graduates, and the lack of recognition of the existence of Larson, the history of this college is in danger of being lost forever.
Staff knew little about Larson and were intrigued by this unheralded piece of Quinnipiac’s history. Documents from the school such as yearbooks, course catalogs and student publications, have been found and will be included in the exhibit. As staff have examined materials, they have found more personal items such as photo albums, dance cards, clothes, and student publications. Staff have found documents saying that Larson alumna gathered oral histories and other material for a reunion in the 1990’s, but as yet those have not been located. Staff are concerned that the last living graduates of Larson are in their 90’s and the stories they have are in danger of being lost forever, and so it is important to reach out to these women and their families soon before the window of opportunity closes for good. If more about these women can be found, the exhibit can tell a richer story of the institution, to include not only its leadership and major accomplishments, but also the lives of the many individuals who were part of the institution.
