This guide provides information on the various types of streaming video options available to faculty who want to incoporate film into their courses.

Requesting Streaming Films for Courses

Faculty who have questions about streaming films for their course should contact Public Services Librarian Bob Young, 203-582-3469.

Updated Guidelines -  Academic Year 2023 - 2024

Due to budgetary restrictions it may be necessary at times to limit the number of films that can be ordered and streamed for individual courses. In some cases (for example, popular Hollywood titles) it is possible to access and watch a film via a short term individual rental provided by a streaming platform like iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, etc. There are also free streaming video platforms such as Tubi, Pluto, and the YouTube -  Movies & TV channel which provide access to many films and TV shows. While the library cannot cover the cost of individual streaming rentals for students, the cost is usually inexpensive and averages about $3.99 per film.

Additional Information

In order to have a streaming film made available for students enrolled in a course to view asynchronously outside of a live class session an educational streaming license is usually required.

Even if the library or an instructor owns a legally produced copy of a film, either on DVD or in another format, it violates copyright to make a streaming version from the copy without first obtaining permission.

The library partners with a number of different vendors who provide educational streaming for all types of films, including feature films, independent films, and documentaries.
