Scientist Spotlight AssignmentPurpose:
The scientist spotlight assignment is an out of class assignment that is designed to introduce students to scientist who belong to groups which may be underrepresented in the sciences. The goal of the assignment is to allow students from these underrepresented groups to see themselves as possible scientists and to stimulate the belief that they themselves can aspire to and become a part of the scientific field.
Method:
Students are assigned a journal article to read which will be reviewed in class. The material from the article reinforces content introduced in the lecture. Prior to the in-class review, students are given the Scientist Spotlight Assignment which contains a brief bio and a picture of one of the authors of the article. Also included is a link to a resource on the scientist which students are directed to read, listen to or watch. Students will complete the questions in the assignment which pertain to the scientist spotlighted and the paper being reviewed.
