Faculty Quick Start

Welcome to the Arnold Bernhard Library!

We are delighted to welcome you as patrons of our library. We've put together a brief guide to let you know a few things that we hope will make your experience of our library smooth and enjoyable. If you have any questions please reach out to refdesk@quinnipiac.edu.

The Basics

  • All library resources may be accessed from the library home page https://libraryguides.quinnipiac.edu/abl
  • When you work remotely (not on the Quinnipiac network) you can use library online resources by starting on the library website and using its links to databases and journals.
  • You may search across most library online resources using OneSearch.
  • Specific databases, eg PsycInfo, are linked from Databases.
  • Print books are also searchable through OneSearch. Borrow any book in the library using your Quinnipiac ID. Books from Netter Medical Library and the Law Library may be requested for delivery to ABL for pickup (and vice versa).
  • The Teaching, Learning and Publishing Collection, new this year, is designed to provide you with practical information for your work. It is available in the North Alcove, first floor ABL.

Accessing Full Text

Two of the most popular ways to find articles and books are Google Scholar and Library OneSearch. The library also offers hundreds of research databases which will link to fulltext. Starting at the library web site will ensure access to full text. Google Scholar and OneSearch have additional steps needed to access fulltext.

1. Google Scholar

  1. Make sure you are signed into your Google account. From the main screen in Google Scholar click on the three line "hamburger men" in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. Under Settings, select Library Links.
  3. In the search box type quinnipiac, which will then select linking for Quinnipiac licensed resources.

Google Scholar settings for Library links, with Quinnipiac University and Full-Text@Quinnipiac U selected.

With these settings you'll now see options for all Full Text available to you as a member of the Quinnipiac community.

2. Library OneSearch

The library provides a very broad Google-like search of books and journals called OneSearch, which is available from the library's homepage. To make OneSearch run optimally the library urges you to set up a MyEbsco Account. This will enable you to get full text and also place holds on books in the collection.

  1. Click the account icon in the upper-right corner and select Sign in to MyEbsco.

Ebsco create account pop up

  1. Your login and password will be your Quinnipiac login and password (what you use to log in to email).
  2. Check the box to consent to EBSCO's Personal Data Collection and Usage policy. .Note that Ebsco complies with strict European Union Laws on data privacy, and they do not share your data with any third parties.
  3. Whenever you start a OneSearch session first log into your account.

Using a personalized account will give you access to digital content and services such as pulling and holding books for you.

Requests for Library Books and More

  • Video: we purchase video for use in classes from several sources such as Kanopy and Swank. Email Bob Young to request a film title(s).
  • Books for Reserves or for the Collection. Fill out a request form if you would like the library to purchase a book and/or to put a book on reserve.
  • Databases and Journals: if you find that a database or journal which is important to your work is not available at Quinnipiac, please email Katie Bauer to request that the library consider purchasing the resource.

Publishing Open Access with No Article Processing Charges

Quinnipiac has agreements with 4 publishers: Cambridge, ACM, Elsevier Science Direct (Hybrid Only), and Springer (Hybrid Only) for free open access publishing. When you are the corresponding author, you may elect to publish OA with no additional fees.

When you submit your article to an eligible journal, you must:

  1. Be the corresponding author.

  2. Use your @qu.edu or @quinnipiac.edu email address.

  3. List "Quinnipiac University" as your primary affiliation.

The publisher’s system should automatically recognize your eligibility, and you will be prompted to select the open access option at no cost.

You do not need permission from the library to publish OA under one of these agreements. Also please note that the processing fee is included in our regular license, there is no extra charge to Quinnipiac University to use these agreements.

1. Springer and Elsevier (Hybrid Journals)

Our agreements with Springer and Elsevier cover any of their hybrid journals. To find a suitable journal, use their journal finder tools:

  •  Search Elsevier Journals

    1. Go to the Elsevier Journal Finder.

    2. Enter your manuscript title and abstract.

    3. The tool will suggest journals. Any journal listed as "Supports open access" is eligible.

  • Search Springer Journals

    1. Go to the Springer Nature Journal Suggester.

    2. Enter your manuscript text.

    3. Look for journals labeled as "Open Choice"—this indicates a hybrid journal eligible under our agreement.

2. Cambridge University Press

Our agreement allows for fee-free open access publishing in Cambridge's hybrid and fully gold open access journals.

3. ACM (Association for Computing Machinery)

Our agreement covers all ACM journals, proceedings, and magazines under the ACM OPEN model.
