While local elections for town, city, county, or statewide offices don’t usually get national media attention, these elections have the biggest influence on your day-to-day quality of life. The relationship between Quinnipiac University and our students and the Town of Hamden and local residents is frequently in the Quinnipiac and local media, and local elections have a major effect on how the town government negotiates with the university leadership.
In any community, local officials set the priorities and budgets for community infrastructure, education, and other services. They are the ones who shape a local area’s activities relating to:
State officials – governor, legislators, and others – influence daily life, for example, setting the state minimum wage and regulate working conditions, expanding or limiting civil rights, planning for traffic and state and interstate road maintenance and construction, and determining voting procedures.
Because state and local elections usually have lower voter turnout than national elections, and are limited to a specific geographic area, the influence and importance of every vote increases.
