Science for Non-Science Majors: Pro/Con Topics

This Library Guide identifies the basic resources to use for assignments in science courses for non-science majors, such as Biology 105 and 106 and all of the Science designated courses, SC 101, SC 102, SC 105, SC 161, etc.

How to Find Information on Both Sides of a Topic

When researching a topic there are many times that we need to find information on both the "benefit" position and the "no-benefit" position.  As we all know, we begin by searching with our topic keywords, for example diabetes and soft drinks

Some article results will address both sides of the issue but not all.  A close reading of the articles may prove to be very helpful.

Another way is to include search terms to focus on the pro/con or for/against content.  When searching library databases, there is a way to work with the root of a word and add an asterisk (*) and any additional letters can be included.  For example, search health* and the database will look for health, healthy, healthful.

In addition to health* some other terms are:

  • safe*
  • risk*
  • benefit*
  • bacteria*
  • contaminan*
  • nutritio*
  • harm*
  • quality
  • adverse
  • positive
  • chemicals
  • "medical research"

The above terms can be searched individually or two or more at the same time.  If you want to search two or more of the terms above at the same time connect them with OR and place the terms in parentheses.  For example:  (safe* or health* or risk*).   These are synonyms and the database will search for any of the terms.
