Waiting Room - Oil on canvas by Katelyn Norman
ARBOR VITAE (ISSN 2374-460X), the creative arts journal of the Quinnipiac University Center for Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, invites our faculty, staff, clinical affiliates, students, and care recipients to share creative deliberations on health, illness, and humanity.
ARBOR VITAE (Latin for “Tree of Life”) is the white matter in the cerebellum of our brain – named thus because it holds striking resemblance to a branching tree. The arbor vitae region of the brain sends and receives movement and sensory information throughout the body. We envision this journal as a nexus for sending and receiving creative expressions of the movements and sensations of our healthcare community – as such, we chose ARBOR VITAE as our name.
The creative arts offer us an opportunity for reflection and exploration of the many manifestations of health and illness. As health professionals, staff, students, and care recipients, we contend daily with human suffering, and the spirit of compassion that joins us one to the other. We can use the creative arts to express our fears, joys, anguish, admiration, and the full array of emotions necessary to walk the road toward wholeness.
