Engraving on top of case: "Presented to Dr. Sinclair MacDonald, on the occasion of his leaving Inverness by his brother medical practitioners here January 1888". 

Newspaper clipping in case reads, in part, "PRESENTATION TO DR SINCLAIR Mac-DONALD.-At a meeting of the Inverness Medical Society on Friday, the President, Dr Aitken, in name of the members, presented a case of surgical instruments to Dr Sinclair Macdonald, who is leaving town to take up a medical practice at Brora. Along with the gift was the following address signed by Dr Aitken, Dr Macnee, Dr Mackenzie, Dr Murray, Dr Ogilvie Grant, Dr Macfadyen, and Dr Chapman: “Dear Dr Macdonald,-In asking you to accept the accompanying gift from us who have been associated with you at our Society meetings, in medical work in Inverness, and as medical attendants to the Northern Infirmary, we would beg to assure you of our united esteem and regard for you, of our appreciation of your professional attainments, and of our recollections of the pleasant relationships which have always existed between us during your residence here. We part from you with sincere regret, but in the hope that every success may attend you in your new field of labour.”
